Kayaking the DC Monuments

I have wanted to do an REI event ever since I moved to Virginia. The Sunset Kayak Tour of the DC Monuments has been at the top of the list and Friday I finally did it. I was a little nervous about bringing my camera, but it turned out fine. The waves were not too rough and I had a drybag to keep it in. The lens of choice was the 35mm. I found it a little too wide – a 50mm or 24-70 would have been perfect.

We started out at the Columbia Island Marina near the Pentagon, paddled out onto the Potomac up to Roosevelt Island. On the Georgetown side of the island we stopped for dinner and to watch the sunset. After that, we had a brisk paddle back around by the Kennedy Center at dusk, then back to the marina. Supposedly 6.5 miles round trip.

It is really hard getting the kayak lined up for the classic “look at me I’m on a kayak” photo of whatever landmark is your subject. Here’s a gallery below.
